Dealing with well water? Why the Aprilaire 800LC matters (plus: UVC vs. regular air purifiers)
If you're on a private well anywhere from Manchester to Bedford, Derry, or Londonderry, you've probably already dealt with one water quality surprise or another. What a lot of well water homeowners don't expect is that the same water can affect how well their whole-home humidifier performs, or that it's a good moment to ask a second question: do you need a UVC air purifier, a regular filter, or both?
Why well water can throw off a standard humidifier
Whole-home steam humidifiers like the Aprilaire Model 800 create steam using electrode technology: an electrical current runs between two submerged electrodes, and the water's own mineral content carries that current. That means the humidifier depends on the water having enough conductivity, not hardness, to work efficiently. Hard water and softened water both perform fine in the standard 800.
The catch is New Hampshire's granite bedrock. Groundwater here typically moves through fractured granite rather than limestone, which means many private wells run soft to moderately hard, with lower mineral content than water that moves through limestone. That's good news for your pipes, but it's exactly the condition that can make a standard steam humidifier slow to respond and underperform. It can take a week or more of runtime to reach full capacity on low-conductivity water.
Enter the Aprilaire 800LC
The 800LC uses a low-conductivity canister built specifically for water with lower mineral content than average, exactly the kind of water a lot of granite-bedrock wells produce. It's the same digital automatic humidistat and overall design as the standard 800; Aprilaire just engineered this version around water that doesn't carry an electrical current as efficiently, so it performs consistently instead of running sluggishly.

While we're at it: UVC vs. regular air purifiers
This is a question that comes up almost as often as the humidifier one, and it's worth separating into three options rather than two.
A UVC in-duct purifier is an active-only technology. It uses germicidal ultraviolet light inside the ductwork to neutralize bacteria, mold spores, and viruses as air passes through, going after what's living in your air supply, without physically filtering particles out.
A basic high-efficiency filter is passive-only technology. It physically traps particles, dust, pollen, and pet dander as air moves through a dense filter media. It doesn't kill anything; it just doesn't let it through.
