Most toilet problems, like a leak at the base or a toilet that runs or flushes on its own, come down to simple parts such as a worn flapper or fill valve, and are usually an easy fix. Common toilet problems we fix

Toilets are actually one of the simpler fixtures to repair, because the parts inside are basic and reliable. Here are the calls we see most often:

  • Leaking at the base. This is our single most common toilet call. A leak at the base often points to a failed wax gasket or a loose connection, and it is worth addressing quickly before it damages your flooring or subfloor.
  • A toilet that won't stop running or flushes on its own. If your toilet randomly "phantom flushes" or runs constantly, the culprit is usually a bad flapper. One quick tip from our Specialists: avoid dropping cleaning tablets into your toilet tank. Those tablets are one of the most common causes of a prematurely worn flapper, and they can quietly cost you a repair.
  • A running toilet. A typical fix here is replacing the flapper or the fill valve, both inexpensive parts that restore your toilet to normal.
  • Weak flush. If your toilet is not clearing the way it should, we will diagnose whether it is a simple internal fix or a sign the unit is ready for replacement.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my toilet keep running or flush by itself?

The most common cause is a worn flapper, which lets water leak from the tank into the bowl until the toilet refills. Replacing the flapper or fill valve usually solves it. Dropping cleaning tablets in the tank can wear the flapper out faster, so we recommend avoiding them.

What is the most common toilet repair you see?

Leaking at the base of the toilet is our most frequent call, followed closely by running toilets caused by a bad flapper.

Should I repair or replace my toilet?

If the parts are simple and the toilet is otherwise in good shape, a repair is usually the best value. Replacement makes more sense if the toilet is cracked, very old, wastes water, or needs several repairs at once, especially if you have been thinking about updating the style.

What toilet brands do you install?

We install any brand. For new installs, we often recommend Kohler for its reliability and easy parts availability, but we are glad to install a Toto, American Standard, or another brand if you prefer.

Do you install wall-hung or dual-flush toilets?

Yes. Our Specialists install and service both wall-hung and dual-flush toilets.

How much water does a new toilet save?

Many new toilets use as little as 1.28 gallons per flush, making them significantly more water-efficient than older models.

Toilet brands we repair and install

We will repair and replace any brand of toilet. When it comes to new installations, we usually recommend Kohler. It is a reliable, well-built product that is easy to service, with great parts availability down the road, which helps protect your investment for years to come.

That said, this is your home. If you have your heart set on another brand like Toto or American Standard, we are happy to install it for you.

Specialty toilets: dual flush and wall-hung

Modern bathrooms come in all styles, and we service them all. Our Specialists work on both dual-flush toilets, which help you save water, and wall-hung toilets, which offer a sleek, space-saving look. These specialty units call for specific know-how, and our team has the hands-on experience to install and repair them correctly.

Repair or replace: how we help you decide

Because toilet parts are so basic, a repair is very often the easy, affordable answer. There are really only a couple of situations where a full replacement makes more sense:

  • You are already investing in multiple repairs, and you have been thinking about a change. If your toilet needs several fixes and you have been on the fence about updating the style anyway, it is often smarter to put that money toward a new toilet you will love.
  • The toilet is cracked, very old, or wasting water. A hairline crack in the porcelain or an aging, inefficient unit is worth replacing. Today's toilets use as little as 1.28 gallons per flush, so a new one is far more water-efficient and environmentally friendly, which can also lower your water usage.

We will always give you our honest recommendation and let you make the call.

Our toilet replacement process

When you choose GSMS for a new toilet, here is exactly what to expect from start to finish:

  1. We arrive on site with the toilet you picked out.
  2. We shut off the water valve and pull the existing toilet.
  3. We inspect the flange to make sure it is in good condition.
  4. We install a new wax gasket and new Johnny bolts.
  5. We set your new toilet in place.
  6. We check that your water shutoff valve is not corroded or ready to fail, and replace it if needed.
  7. We connect a new water supply line, fill the tank, and flush several times to confirm there are no leaks anywhere.
  8. We finish with caulking around the base, which is a plumbing code requirement and gives you a clean, finished look.
