Why Mini-splits and Boilers Can’t Support Whole-Home Air Quality Add-ons

If you're running a ductless mini-split system or heating with a boiler, whole-home humidifiers and UV air purifiers are worth understanding before you shop for them. These add-ons depend on something your system may not have: ductwork.

Why humidifiers and UV air purifiers live inside your ductwork

Whole-home humidifiers (steam vs. bypass humidifiers) and UV air purifiers like the Lennox Healthy Climate Induct Air Purifier or PureAir system aren't standalone appliances. They install directly into the ductwork already carrying air through your home.

A bypass humidifier mounts on the return duct and pulls air through a water panel using airflow your system is already generating. A steam humidifier injects moisture straight into the supply duct near the furnace or air handler. UV purifiers install on the supply side, positioned above the coil or heat exchanger, so every cubic foot of air gets treated before it reaches your rooms.

Every one of these products depends on air already moving through a network of ducts. No ductwork means nowhere to install them, and nothing pulling air past them even if there were.

Ductless mini-splits don't have anywhere to put them

Mini-splits heat and cool without ductwork. Each indoor head conditions the room it's in directly, which is part of what makes ductless systems so efficient, but it also means there's no central duct system for a humidifier or UV purifier to tie into.

You may come across air purifier attachments marketed specifically for mini-splits. Our Specialists have tested a number of them, and none have delivered results that hold up against a real duct-mounted system. If you're counting on one of these for whole-home air quality, you're likely not getting what you paid for.

Boilers have the same problem, for a different reason

Boilers heat your home with hot water circulated through radiators or baseboard, not air. There's no blower or air handler moving conditioned air through the house, so there's no delivery system for humidified or purified air even if you wanted to add one.

This is one reason homes with boiler heat that also want air conditioning or air quality equipment often end up looking at a separate ducted system rather than trying to retrofit one onto the boiler itself.

What to do if you have a mini-split or boiler and want better air quality

Whole-home humidification and UV purification are built around forced air systems specifically. If that's not what's heating and cooling your home, your options look different:

  • Portable, room-specific units for the space that needs it most
  • Adding a small ducted system alongside your mini-splits, in homes where that makes sense
  • Rethinking your air quality goals around what your existing system can actually support
